CLR-35 redesignates to 3rd Combat Readiness Regiment
CAMP KINSER, OKINAWA, JAPAN — Combat Logistics Regiment 35, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, was redesignated to 3rd Combat Readiness Regiment during a redesignation ceremony at Camp Kinser, Okinawa, Japan, Sept. 9, 2026.
Marines with the newly designated 3rd CRR and leadership for 3rd MLG were in attendance for the formal redesignation process, seeing the retiring of the CLR-35 colors and the unveiling of the new 3rd CRR standard.
The regiment's redesignation and structural transformation directly aligns with the Marine Corps' Force Design efforts to modernize logistics, ensuring distributed forces can persist in contested environments and remain combat effective.
The redesignation event honored both the regiment's historic legacy and the continuous commitment of its personnel. For the individual Marines within the ranks, the transition represented a unique milestone in their service.
"Being a part of this point in history is special because we got to be a part of the unit securing its identity as 3rd CRR," said Sgt. Giancarlo Veloria, a network administrator serving with the unit.
First established in 1958 on Okinawa, the unit has a storied legacy of logistics and sustainment operations across the Indo-Pacific and global theaters. From supporting combat echelons during the Vietnam War to deploying elements for operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, the regiment’s history is defined by adaptability and combat resolve, and this redesignation continues that legacy.
“It’s not every day that you’re involved with a redesignation or reorganization of a unit; it is very rare,” said Sgt. Maj. Adrian Lopez, sergeant major for the 3rd Combat Readiness Regiment. “I don’t take this for granted because of the significance that it has, not just to the unit, but to the entire Marine Corps, and being the last combat readiness regiment to be redesignated.”
During the ceremony, Col. Robert Fairley, commanding officer of the newly designated 3rd CRR, oversaw the unfurling of the unit's new colors, symbolizing a new chapter of logistical capability and mission execution as he transferred the battle steamers from the retiring CLR-35 colors.
Leaders emphasized that the transition reinforces long-term cohesion and operational readiness across the Indo-Pacific theatre. Brig. Gen. Christopher Haar, commanding general of 3rd MLG,stated that by adapting its organizational composition, 3rd CRR transitions from legacy sustainment pipelines to a more agile, technologically integrated logistics model. This evolution ensures that the unit can rapidly deploy flexible, low-signature tactical echelons capable of sustaining stand-in forces and maintaining operational readiness across contested naval environments.
3rd CRR provides intermediate supply support and field-level maintenance support for 3rd MLG assets and contributes to III Marine Expeditionary Force missions in the Indo-Pacific region.
